Phoebe Caufield – Hank Michels and Eric Idelfonso
Phoebe Caufield is the younger sister of Holden Caufiled who lives with both of her parents in New York City. Her middle name is Josephine. She is very tidy for her age and sophisticated although, like Holden, is very critical of others. (When she describes her night at the movie with a friend to Holden)
Phoebe first shows up in D.B.’s room when Holden comes to visit her. She is, however, mentioned several times throughout the course of the book. When Holden tells her what happens she is upset and keeps re and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. It’s literally like that many times. She helps her brother before he leaves and makes an appearance at the end of the book before she goes on the carousel. Phoebe does not change throughout the course of the book.
Likes: Holden, Movies, Acting, Carousel and skating Dislikes: People talking in the theater, people breathing on her food, Holden’s disregard for food, the thought Holden leaving without her and that bully kid from school
Quotes: “Daddy’s gonna kill you” This quote is repeated several times by phoebe and it shows that she cares a lot for Holden
“You keep it-keep it for me” This is Phoebe talking about money. This is he Christmas money and she wants to give it all to Holden. Once again this shows how much she cares for him.

Stephen Ali & Matthew Baker
Mr.Antolini is Holden’s former English teacher from Elkton Hills School. He lives with his wife in a fancy New York apartment and is a good friend of Holden and his family. Holden previously spent time with Mr.Antolini doing various activities. Mr. Antolini quit his teaching gig at Elkton Hills to teach at NYU. Holden looks to his as a mentor and says quote, “He has a good sense of humor.” (174) and, “He was the best best teacher he ever had” (174). Some of the traits Holden gives to describe Mr.Antolini are funny, and clever. Holden thinks Mr.Antolini is a very caring man after an occurrence where a student named James Castle jumped out of a window after being harassed. Mr. Antolini picked his body and brought it to the infirmary. We see him first as a caring man but later in the novel we have different feelings about him after what had happened during the book between him and Holden. Five likes I think Mr.Antolini would have are: drinking, education, teaching, smoking, and reading. Five dislikes I think he might have are: Phonies (Ones described by Holden), Loud music, pessimists, Elkton Hills, and inconsiderate people. Holden said, “Mr.Antolini was very nice. He said could come right over if I wanted to” (174). This quote shows that Mr.Antolini is comfortable with Holden and enjoys his presence and the feelings are obviously mutual for Holden. Holden said, “He was the best teacher the best teacher I ever had….He was a pretty young guy and you could kid around with him without losing respect for him.” (174). This second quote shows how Holden feels about Mr.Antolini. He obviously connected with him well considering his pessimistic attitude towards the majority of the people he meets.

Allie Caufield is Holden’s younger brother. Allie dies of leukemia three years before the start of the novel. Allie was a red-headed boy—according to Holden, he was the smartest of the Caulfields. Holden is sad about Allie’s death and carries around a baseball glove on which Allie used to write poems in green ink. He was also left handed. Holden describes his personality as being brilliant, friendly. His only weakness was that he had leukemia which he died from. One thing that Allie may have disliked the fact that he had leukemia and that his brother didn't allow him to go BB gunning with him. Some things he might like is sports and poems since he combined them when he played baseball, and toy sail boats. "My brother Allie had this left handed fielders mitt. He was left handed. The thing that was descriptive about it, though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere"( Salinger 38). Holden is reflecting on when he found Allie's mitt. This reveals that Allie like poems and baseball. " He was two years younger then I was, but he was about fifty times as intelligent. He was terrifically intelligent. His teachers were always writting letters to my mother, telling her what a pleasure it was having a boy like Allie in their class" (Salinger 38) Holden is reflecting on Allie's death. This quote shows that Allie was just as intelligent as Holden even if he was younger, and how nice he was.

Holden Caulfield Chapters 1-8 By: Stephanos Cocoves & Mike Vazquez
1. Holden is 16-year-old boy who goes to a boarding school and is originally from New York City. He is 6’2 and has a bit of grey hair already even though he is still in high school. He looks old for his age, and has bad health because he is a heavy smoker and drinker. During chapters 1 through 8 he is kicked out of Pencey, is scolded to by Old Spencer about going no where in life, we see a moment of pure emotion where he decides not to mess up the perfect snow, he gets in a fight with Stradlater over a girl he use to know, and ends up leaving Pencey early to go back to NYC.
2. Holden is a depressed, lazy, sexually confused, anxious, and judgmental. He is constantly judging people before he gets to know them and calls almost everyone a phony. He has a very skewed look on the world and does not seem to really care for anything he does. From Chapters 1-8 not much change is seen in Holden’s character. What we do see in these chapters is Holden’s desire to preserve innocence, as seen when he did not want to disturb the perfect snow. At the end of the chapters we see Holden start to spiral out of control when he decides to leave Pencey in the middle of the night for New York.
3. Like- Kids, Phoebe, Jane, books, drinking Dislikes- Phonies, people with authority, adults, movie, Pencey
4. “I mean if a boy’s mother was sort of fat or corny looking or something, and if somebody father was one of those guys that wear those suits with very big shoulders and corny black and white shoes then give old Haas would just shake hands with them and give them a phony smile and then he’d go talk, for maybe half an hour, with somebody’s else parents.” This quote shows Holden’s dislike of authority figures and people that he believes are phonies. “I kept laying there in the dark anyway, though, trying not to think about old Jane and Stradlater in that goddam Ed Banky's car. But it was almost impossible. The trouble was, I knew that guy Stradlater's technique. That made it even worse.” This quote shows Holden’s desire to preserve the innocence of people because he knows that Stradlater takes peoples innocence.

Jane Gallagher
1. Jane is a girl with whom Holden spent a lot of time with one summer, when their families stayed in neighboring summer houses in Maine. Jane never actually appears in the book, but she is extremely important to Holden, because she is one of the few girls whom he both respects and finds attractive. He longs to see her and speak with and yet he never does even when he has the opportunity. For Holden, she represents the unknown, the struggle between innocence and adulthood. Holden remembers that she likes checkers, but she never uses her kings when she plays. Also we never really get a full physical description of Jane but we do know that she is not pretty to Holden's mother, and also she never really closes her mouth, its always a bit open.
2. Holden describes her as a funny girl. She is very intelligent and loves to read and is fond of athletic sports. Jane is seen as the most important person in Holden's life. She is one of the few people who he sees as real and not phony. He cares about her more than anybody else. Jane is seen as the best friend of Holden.
3. Holden says that Jane loves to read, play sports, and to play checkers. Holden and Jane also went golfing a lot, despite the fact that she lost numerous balls. Holden never really discussed any dislikes that Jane had, but it can be assumed she did not like her step-father because of the abuse, and when she was shown crying when he walked into the house. Holden also said that his parents did not get along with Jane.
4. "She was the only one outside my family that i ever showed Allie's baseball kit to." This was Holden's most prized possession.this shows how much Holden trusted Jane and how strong their friendship was. "He made out like she was concentrating on her next move in the game and all. Then all of a sudden, this tear plopped down on the checkerboard. On one of the red squares—boy, I can still see it. She just rubbed it into the board with her finger." This showed the tough life that Jane grew up in with an abusive parent.

Jotirmoy Kundu Ray Jacob Park Sally Hayes Sally Hayes is an attractive teenage girl that Holden dated before. Sally is quite full of herself. She knows that she is pretty and tries to show it off. In one scene of the book, Sally asks Holden if they can go Ice Skating purely for the reason to wear the skirts that are given to the female skaters at the rink. Sally is a character that Holden is attracted to. In one scene, Holden asks Sally to run away with him and live together. But she rejects Holden’s offer and gets insulted by Holden consequently. Sally is a very shallow character. She solely wants to have fun and live life through shortcuts, in Holden’s words a phony. She is fake, not having any true loyalty to anything. Her strengths are that she has a somewhat decent relationship with Holden and that she can sympathize with him. Her major weakness is her shallowness. She can’t have an intimate relationship with anyone due to her flirtatious personality. Likes - The notebook
- Wedding crashers
- Valentine’s Day
- New Year’s Eve
- Serendipity
Dislikes - Inception
- 21 and Over
- Project X
- Sherlock Holmes
- Matrix
"You can't just do something like that" – This is Sally trying to sound like the reasonable one to Holden when he says he wants to run away and getting married. "one of those little skirts" - This is Holden talking about Sally being “slutty” but he likes it and thinks its cute.

Robert Ackley (Jason and Nicco) A boorish, obnoxious student at Pencey, Ackley lives in a dorm room connected to the one where Holden lives. He is socially inept and physically disgusting; his complexion is poor and Holden suspects that he never brushes his teeth.
He is obnoxious, isolated, and seen to be generally quiet around people. But he doesn't seem that bad since he doesn't talk much. But his weaknesses is his weird and awkward character and he does not develop.
He likes Holden, listening to other people, he hates Stradlater.
He was a very peculiar guy. He was a senior, and he'd been at Pencey the whole four years and all, but nobody ever called him anything except "Ackley." Holden explains how Ackely's life was at Pencey. He didn't like it when you called him "Ackley kid." He was always telling me I was a goddam kid, because I was sixteen and he was s eighteen. Holden says how Ackley gets bothered.

Old Spencer- Jacques Youssef and Adrian Filpo 1) Old Spencer is a teacher at Holden's old school, Pency. He is 70 years old. He picks his nose in front of Holden and used to nod a lot for no reason. He always embarrassed Holden by reading him his bad work and criticizing him. He is a good teacher but he doesn't know how to talk to his students in a way that isn't harsh. Apart of this could be because he is very old and grumpy. 2) Old Spencer always cared about Holden deep inside but he never displayed his care for Holden the right way. He always read Holden his bad work and this is an example of how he "helped" Holden the wrong way. He was a slob and he always seemed to act like a grumpy old guy who always had his own unique view on life. 3) Likes - Likes criticizing his students work - Likes being a slob and acting grumpy - Likes nodding - Likes saying intricate words(Engfish) - Likes lecturing Dislikes I couldn't really find anything he doesn't like. We only see him in once chapter, and most of the time, he's lecturing Holden. 4) "Life is a game that one plays according to the rules."- Old Spencer is saying that all people should follow the "rules" and be good when playing the "game of life."- This actually shows that Old Spencer is wrong about something. Not everybody follows these rules and people do bad things to get what they want. "I don't know boy, I don't know."- (When Holden asks if everyone goes through phases)- Old Spencer has a superior complex with his students and thinks he knows it all. When he responds to Holden's questions like this, it shows that he doesn't know everything and that he's not the know it all guy we see him as.

Michael Loseto, Ian Richter Mr. Thomas English 10 7 April 2014 Sunny and Maurice Maurice is an elevator attendant. However, he is also a pimp, or sugar daddy. Sunny is a relatively young woman, however, she is a prostitute of Maurice. Holden meets Maurice in an elevator and has Sonny sent to his room for a “good time”. Maurice is a two-faced character. Maurice was able to convince Holden that Holden could get one of his prostitutes for $10.00. Although Maurice offers one of his girls for such a cheap price, he later jumps Holden for his money. We clearly see how Maurice is two-faced and how he can turn on someone so quickly. His ability to act so fake around people is his most impressive feature. Sonny seems to be in a very bad and particular situation. She is controlled by Maurice and she has very limited freedom. She also doesn’t seem very comfortable around Holden and whatever she was sent there to do, she just wants to get it over with. 1. Likes money 2. Likes control 3. Dislikes confrontation 4. Likes to use people 5. Likes to be involved with vice Sunny: “So long, crumb-bun”. This is when Sally is leaving Holden’s room. We see how she doesn’t have the class to say bye nicely. Maurice: “Chief you’re gonna force me inna roughin’ you up a little bit. I don’t wanna do it, but that’s the way it looks.”, he said, “You owe us five bucks.” Similar to Sally, Maurice also has very low class as he threatens Holden with violence if he didn’t pay his dues.
