C. This story started off a bit confusing for me and I'm sure many of you guys might also agree with me here. The story starts off explaining that there's a war going on. "The war continued without decisive results for nine years." Who started this war and why did it start? Also this story confused me with all the names, again. Why does Chryseis and Chryses have to look so similar? It makes reading the story from the start so frustrating. E. I feel that Achilles is the character I enjoyed reading about the most. He is a strong and fierce character. I also found him interesting because at some points of the story, he became more of a loving character especially towards his mother. I. @jacksonhill...I also agree with you that the relationships between Achilles and his mother Thetis is a caring one. His mother cared for his son so much that she said the Greeks would pay for what they have done. "Thetis, the mother of Achilles, warmly resented the injury done to her son. She repaired immediately to Jove's palace and besought him to make the Greeks repent of their injustice to Achilles by grating success to the Trojan arms." I now look at Achilles as a calm person around his mother and fierce around others.

E. Achilles is a very important character in the Illiad, he is an interesting character. He is portrayed as a great warrior fighting in the Trojan War. However Achilles withdraws himself and his troops from the war. Agameneon called a council to try and get him to fight again “but Achilles was deaf to their entreaties.” At this point in the story he seems cowardous and only caring about himself. But we see that he has a strong friendship with Patroclus. Achilles is nice and kind to Patroclus while rude and mean to others. Patroclus eventually is killed by Hector and his death hurts Achilles, he becomes much more emotional and vunerable. Achilles returns to the battlefield to kill Hector, avenging Patroclus’s death.
C. Like the Mycenaean Saga this story is also hard to follow and understand. It is very fast moving with characters getting introduced frequently. There is a lot of information to take in. Why do so many characters have to be mentioned especially when the names are really similar like Chryseis and Chryses.
G. If I were Achilles I would probably be pretty sad, angry, and annoyed. I would be annoyed at all the people wanting to go back and fight in the war, sad and depressed over the death of my best friend Patroclus, and filled with anger towards Hector and I would want to get revenge on him for killing Patroclus.

A. The whole reason for the Trojan war was the kidnapping of Helen. While this seems insignificant it became a large conflict and continued for many years causing thousands of unnecessary deaths. I think this is relatable to the current issue of religion and how people do not want to tolerate anybody different than them. Because of these people’s intolerance wars have been fought, and hostility created between different groups of people.
C. I was a bit confused when the god Pallas assumed the form of Hector’s brother Deiphoubs. Hector seems relieved at first “Hector saw him with delight, and thus strengthened stopped his flight and turned to meet Achilles.” After Pallas stops Hector he disappears leaving Hector alone to face Achilles. He makes a remark about how he was deceived and his brother was still in Troy. It would seem that Hector would have bee able to make that connection earlier since his brother had not been there for some time.
D. “Achilles approached, terrible as Mars, his armor flashing lightning as he moved. At that sight Hector’s heart failed him and he fled.” I enjoyed this quote because it shows how imposing Achilles is by comparing him to the god of war and his armor to lightning. I think by comparing his armor to lighting it metaphorically shows the rage emanating form him.

A. I like Achilles a lot. I think he is a very interesting characters. One trait that stands out to me is his strength and you can tell that is why he is one of the main characters in this text. I can relate a little to him because he fights for glory and women of course, which I would have done. He is a little conceited like me. But we both are much more than that. Achilles fights very hard after his friend dies and it shows the emotion in him that he has feelings. Just like me. This I why I like Achilles.
B. The story was very confusing, but I can see why this is the beginning part or introduction to the Odyssey, because of the anger throughout the text. As you can see in the first line “The war continued without decisive results for nine years” you can imagine how war-like the Odyssey is going to be. Without this part, I feel like I would not fully understand what is happening in the Odysseys and would probably feel lost.
C. The part that confused me right off the bat was the part about the gods and goddesses. It says that Juno, Minerva and Neptune favored the Greeks and Venus and Mars favored the Trojans. Couldn’t they just end this war themselves between each other because they are so powerful? Aren’t they much stronger than the humans? Why does it take them 10 years to do anything.

The Iliad (post by Nicco Vanible) C. When the story explained of the gods and their parties, “The gods and goddesses interested themselves as much in this famous war as the parties themselves,” I was wondering if this sort of incident came up before. Since Greek Mythology has their own weird logic on situations, when it came to war, I’m wondering if they chose sides based on trivial things like the fairest lady, or if there is a more political side to it that either benefits them (i.e. amusement/entertainment) or do they just pick sides for the fun of it. D. When Achilles’ friend breaks down, “Achilles heard the fate of his friends with such distress that Antilochus feared for a while that he would destroy himself,” I felt that this ties in directly to Antilochus’ interactions and significance throughout the war. Not only might it be stressful to risk his life, but he probably experienced other dreadful and devastating incidents that lead him to mentally break down like that. In addition, his mental weakness could be all of the pressure of this war, as it is winner takes all. Making the slightest mistake, could easily end up being his last. E. With the council and the disgust towards Agamemnon, “Renouncing his displeasure against Agamemnon and bitterly lamenting the miseries that had resulted from it, he called on them to proceed at once to the field,” I was excited, as I easily picked up on the tension that was arising in the story. With Achilles’ speech about his hatred for Agamemnon, I knew the intensity was going to reach its peak soon. I felt that he clearly gave his points, and admired how confident he was to go back to war and finish the job that he is determined to see through to the end.

C-In The Odyssey, I felt that it was too confusing without reading the whole story. The most confusing was at the start with Chryseis and Chryses really. That part was really had to grasp. I also didn't understand why had they had a priest? Was it normal for mortals to start wars and avoid the wrath of the gods? Why was Achilles so conflicted that he withdrew his troops? E-The character that left me in shock was Achilles. When I first started reading the passage, I thought he was a crazy guy who is out to kill everyone. Then I realized he was only really fighting because of the death of his friend Patroclus. He wanted to avenge him. Achilles then showed another side of himself throughout the book. Achilles was also a soft soul. I was surprised at the fact that Achilles was not just a blood thirsty killer, but also a soft and caring soul. F- I don’t understand how to explain the relationships lie between the Gods and the humans. It is put out that the Gods seem to want to help the humans out, but because of Jupiter, they cant. I didn't get what team Juno was for. I also found a sense of hypocritical-ism when Jupiter gets to help out the Trojans, but then when Neptune tries to help the Greeks, he is told to stop as Hector had fell. She helped out the Greeks by distracting Jupiter and grabbing all of his attention to himself so he couldn't notice the Greeks.

C. Did Achilles give up his girl before he returned to Greece or did he return with her? "Achilles submitted, but forthwith declared that he would take no further part in the war " (par 1) and "it also said Achilles to share in the spoil " (par1). Was the spoil a girl? And if it was did he get her?
D. I enjoyed the line " The gods and the goddesses interested themselves as much in this famous war as the parties themselves. " (par 2). I enjoyed it because I thought it was funny that while the mortals were fighting and dying that the gods and goddesses were partying. When I reread this line again I realized that the parties were actually political and not what I first thought.
E. Patroclus was strongly moved with this address, and hastened back to Achilles, revolving in his mind all he had seen and heard. Patroclus is trying to save the people who he knows through war. Diomede, Ulyssesr, Agamemnon, and Machaon are all held captive Achilles agrees to send his army and told them to try and rescue them because if you continue the war and lose you'll embarrass me. My reaction is that Achilles knows he's already going to lose so that's why didn't want to go. I feel like he's only supporting Patroclus on the outside because he will not go only send his troops who might be feeling that they were abandoned because they are being sent to their death.

C. I don’t understand why the Gods and Goddesses wanted to get involved with the fighting. I understand that there was some rivalries and disputes, but why pick sides with the humans. It seemed like the Gods and Goddesses were either bored or just wanted to show off their powers. It makes no sense because they all already knew the outcome, so why would them try to change it? Also, When Achilles leaves because Agamemnon wouldn’t give Chryseis back only if Achilles exchanges her for his girl. Why would he just walks away? It seemed like Achilles only really cared about himself, not the people he has to protect. In addition, I wished that all of the Gods were translated to the Greek names, not the Roman ones. Even though they are the same it takes me longer to realize who is who.
A. It seems like this story is like a present day war. When two smaller countries fight usually the bigger ones follow. For example, say two small countries decide to go to war, Like the things that are going on in Syria, bigger countries like the United States, England, Russia, and China take sides. This reminds me of the Gods or bigger nations, taking sides.
B. The quote “ and in the division of the spoil a female captive, by name Chryseis, daughter of Chryses, priest of Apollo, had fallen to the share of Agamemnon.” I think this quote is important because without this the war would remain the same, and the war would have gone on and on.
