D: I thought it was really cruel that his family just let him be in his room. They just left the door open so that they could watch him. The tone in this chapter is very depressing. Like when the Dad comes home and he's taking off his uniform and decides not to go to bed and starts muttering about his sad life. it reminds me of my dad. He used to do that when he got home, but he was a drinker and a smoker and very depressed. In this chapter they replace the cleaning lady with a cheaper paying one. Maybe somehow the mother and father aren't making enough money as they were before. We see Gregor in this chapter sort of suffer from some anxiety and depression. He starts to blame himself and he does not want to eat or sleep. thought it was really funny when the cleaning lady threatens to hit Gregor with a chair.
C: Does the Mother Sew for a living or is that just a hobby? Also, Why when he father started to take off his uniform it starts to get dirty. Is this supposed to represent the job being dirty or work being dirty. Is this like a metaphor?
G: if i were Gregor i would try not to worry as much about the problems in life. It makes you really stressed out and its very unhealthy. Also, his parents aren't helping much either and their being quite cruel to him.

He starts to blame himself and he does not want to eat or sleep. thought it was really funny when the cleaning lady threatens to hit Gregor with a chair. C. i felt like this was a very unsatisfying story. The ending was so bleak and the last page i felt like was very irrelevant to the rest of the story or maybe not. I feel like that without Gregor now, his family will fall apart. D. maybe the ending of when the parents decide they will find a good husband for Grete is a way of showing that Gregors dream of Grete going to art school will never happen now that he is dead.

E. Well I am now depressed. I was reading like a good student and all and then the story announces to me that Gregor is dead. At first I did not believe it. I thought the maid had taken him in to save him. This notion was reinforced when she said that she had handled the “corpse”. Then the story ended just like that. I could not believe it! That’s just it! I was expecting Gregor to live on as king of the roaches or something or live a nice life with the maid. This is just too much of a shock to me.
F. Apparently the relationship between Gregor and his sister his completely dissolved. After the event of Gregor being attracted to his sister’s violin playing and the tenants flipping out she makes a disturbing conclusion. They only thing they can do is get rid of “it”. In fact she doesn’t even seem to recognize Gregor as himself anymore. This is just such a drastic change from the girl who would look in on him and give him food. It is just such a saddening turn of events.
C. I wonder what sparked the maid’s interest in Gregor. She could not let him go. She would always barge in on him just too look at him. She also was not scared of him. Most people panicked at the sight of him but she looked on in awe. Maybe she was just interested in the giant roach that liven in a spare room of an ordinary apartment.

C. This whole chapter is very depressing and upsetting. Why does Gregor's family treat him like a ghost now? Even the sister just quickly brushes in some food for Gregor. Also if the mother cared even a little bit about her son's life, she would take out the apple off from his back, wouldn't she? I mean all this negative and dismissive attitude in his family is just very hard to read. Also they turn his room into a storage room for all the useless junk and things they have left in the house. Although it gave Gregor something to do, it just shows how and what they think of Gregor. Also they leave him all alone to die in his room and rot. This doesn't make sense to me. Why do you even let Gregor live if that is how the parents are going to treat him this way?
F. Gregor's relationship with his family just slowly died and disintegrated. Eventually they dont even recognize that the bug is gregor any longer. After the multiple events of startling the lodgers in the house and the attraction to his sister's violin playing, it becomes evident that the close family bonds that once existed does not exist anymore.
I. I agree with Ian richter that the moment when I read that Gregor is dead, I was also shocked. I was indeed very shocked that he died such a lonley and sad death. I felt such sorrow and pity for the poor child.

C. I dont understand how they can afford to have a maid and they are all working jobs. It just doesn't make sense. and also that they only find out how much money they have until after gregor dies and the end of the book. If u were really that poor wouldn't you be keeping very close attention to your money because isnt is so valuable.
F. I thought it was sad to see the relationship between his gregor and his parents disappear. I thought there was someway they were going to fix the relationship but it was to late.
I. I agree with Dakot's C response. It did feel like an unsatisfying ending. I thought there should have been more.

I. I have to agree with Richter on this one, I was really depressed at the end of the story. I thought like Richter that he was gonna live on as king of the roaches, or even just live in general. And he died so abruptly, they just woke up and he was dead. I really thought he was going to live and be turned back into himself, after some what of a journey. Maybe his family had to help him turn back but instead they wished he would leave. Who does that to their son!? And he worked to please them and when he was a bug he was sad because he could no longer work for them, that just shows how much love the family really has for him. F. How did the strongest relationship in the story completely go away! Just one chapter ago Grete was trying to help Gregor by keeping him comfortable but now its like hes just a cockroach. Is this just because of when she was playing the violin and Gregor comes out scaring away the tenants? How can she try and convince her dad that he is no longer Gregor but just a bug? And now it seems the strongest relationship is with the dad. He tries not to let Gregor go and needs to be convinced by Grete that hes no longer there. C. I dont understand why Gregor's family wants him to leave so badly. Why does the family need tenants they obviously have jobs and can last. And why do they need a maid that's just one extra person they have to pay. Its almost like they forgot Gregor was even there anymore, its just a dirty bug now.

E. So in the end, gregor dies. I feel like I saw that coming. By the end of the story, I felt like it was not about gregor and instead it was more about the family. It was just told from gregors point of view. At the beginning of part three, gregor continues to become more animalistic and his family ignores him more and more. Its when gregor finds out that the one person who cared for him, his sister, insults him (saying that gregor would have left long ago if he was still there (mentally)), that he dies in the night. Now just by knowing that part, it seems that there is no moral or meaning to the story. But it’s the families final reaction that provides the meaning. After gregor dies, they don’t care to much, but they come to realize what they have. They realize thay have a lot of money and that they don’t need a maid or a nice place in the city, so they move to the country and get a nice home. They also realize that grete is attractive and want her to marry off. Not sure what the point of including that in the story is, but sure, why not.
C. Im still confused on why gregors family made him do all the work. I guess that the author left it up to us. Im going to say that maybe, they hated gregor. Maybe when he was born, they had wanted a girl and when grete was born, they used him as labor. Even though the story ended horribly and their son had to die for them to live like a real family, I think they still got fixed in the end.
A. In retrospect, this story distantly reminds me of king Arthur

I. i agree with zaysofly, "I thought it was really cruel that his family just let him be in his room. They just left the door open so that they could watch him. The tone in this chapter is very depressing. He starts to blame himself and he does not want to eat or sleep. thought it was really funny when the cleaning lady threatens to hit Gregor with a chair." He portrayed what I was trying to say accurately.
C. I dont understand how they have a maid when they all have meager paying jobs. This made no sense at all and i found it dumb that they found out how much money they make after Gregor passes. They should've have been taking a close look at the money they had since they were so "poor".
F. I thought it was sad to see the relationship between his gregor and his parents get so bad that it dissapeared. I thought they were going to fix it, but it was way too late.

b a couple comment in the new cleaning woman. I think that part of the book is really significant because she is the last person that possibly sees Gregor as a human… She seems to be kind to him so the only thing I don’t get about Gregor and the cleaning lady was why Gregor has attacked
a A saying that I hear everyday almost came up in this story and it struck me greatly “everything happens for a reason.” In this case I think everything that happened to Gregor ends up happening for the well being of Grete and everyone.
c a Couple questions about the relationship between Gregor and Greete and also the father and Gregor. It seemed to me last chapter Grete really liked taking care of Gregor and was happy to do so, however things changed this chapter. What event happened that caused Grete to no longer like caring for Gregor? Could it possibly be her realization or incorrect realization that Gregor doesn’t have any more humanity left in him? Also in the chapter previous to this one, the father doesn’t seem to like Gregor that much but this too seems to change. Why does he all of a sudden still want to try to find some human characteristics left in Gregor? Why did the family take in the boarders? Finally, this last line, “their daughter jumped to her feet and stretched her young body.” What does that line symbolize for us? Why was Gregor ever an insect.

C. This was a very depressing chapter and ending to the story. I found it pretty interesting that Gregor’s family went about caring for him to happy for his death in the span of one chapter. Shortly before Gregor’s family had wanted to make sure that he was happy, especially the sister who would bring him food but now half-heartedly brought it to him. The change is a polar opposite to what they were doing before. They went from being afraid of Gregor and taking care of him to not being afraid of him and leaving him to die. The only person who seems to care about him was the charwoman who was not even related to him.
D. “But even if the sister, worn out by her job, ceased to tend to him as she used to, there was no need for the mother’s intervention or for Gregor to be at all neglected”. This quote shows exactly how the sister has stopped taking care of Gregor at all and the family does not seem to care. I do not understand this at all. They just suddenly lost interest in Gregor and decided that he was not worth their time or what? The only person who is genuinely interested in him is the charwoman, and she seems him more as a plaything and not a family member as the others should.
E. I agree with hankmichels C. The family never really seemed to give much attention to Gregor so there must have been some other reason that they did not care for him. They made him do all the work and then confined him to that room and eventually were happy that he was dead. All of this created a very weird relationship between the people in the family. I don’t understand it and I can’t imagine a reason for their actions.

C. Something I am confused about is why Gregor's family treats him like basically a ghost, like he doesn't exist at all. He was always there for them even though they always treated him cruelly. They should at least recognize what gregor has done for them, but they never do, which is what confuses me.
B. I feel that the ending of this book did not really relate to what was said in the rest of the book. To me the ending did not really tie in with what was said througout the rest of the book
I. I agree with Dakota's C response when he said that this ending was not very satisfying at all. Like it jsut ended, with no real explination. The ending was kind of bland.

C. This chapter was very depressing. I didn't care for reading this chapter at all. First off, why is Gregor's family treating him like such an outcast? He was once a hard working man that provided for his family. As soon as he was not of any use to them, they turned on him. Something tragic happened to him and they barely did anything support him, in fact, they made his condition worse by excluding him from family activities.
I. I agree with what Dakota said about the ending. The ending didn't really tie in with the rest of the book and it wasn't really satisfying. It ended without any clear explanation and it ended up being flat and boring to read. It was prolonged longer than it had to be or needed to be.
F. Seeing Gregor's relationship with his family deteriorate was depressing. It was very sad to see this relationship fall apart so quickly. I would've liked to see Gregor's family stick by him instead of turn on him, especially so quickly.
