C. I don’t really understand why Holden is just calling up some girl that his friend told him about. This guy wasn’t even his friend, he was more like and acquaintance. But why would he call her. He had no idea who she was. It just seems like this was some act of desperation by Holden. He was feeling really lonely and just wanted to talk to someone. Still he had no idea who she was. She could have been some nut case. On the other hand she probably thought he was a nut case. Just some random guy calling her at the middle of the night. This just seemed like a really bad idea to me.
E. I can tell that Holden really needs someone to be friends with or at least reach out too. First the lady on the train. He wants to talk to he but he just lies to her, which is something I still don’t understand. Then when he got off the train and is sitting in the phone booth. He wants to call people but he cant. Then he calls the mystery girl at the hotel. I feel bad for Holden in a way. He seems trapped and wants someone to vent to. when he does though something gets in the way and he lies. Why, I don’t know.
F. It seems that Holden really does have some love for his family deep down. We see this when he is pacing up to leave Pency. He thinks about the ice skates his mother gives him. He feels bad about letting his mom down again when she still tries to love and nurture him. This seems like a really sad situation to me.

Stephen Ali English 10 Homework Mr. Thomas March 9, 2014 E. Mt reactions are to the scene in chapter 7 when Holden is talking to Ackley. At first it seem to me as if they were getting along pretty well considering Ackley is a weirdo. It kind of reminded me when a student talks to his guidance councilor for help. Holden was really expressing what he felt to someone that no one really liked. As soon as Holden was open to give himself up and be venerable to Ackley. Ackley has to ruin their entire conversation. This is kind of why I think everyone hates Ackley. In my opinion Ackley really does not know how to act around people . He has no type of social skills , which is why I think he just locks himself in his room all day. C. I am not really sure why Holden is trying to meet another girl , because judging on previous chapters he seems to really like Jane , he also seems to b very important to him. When Holden gets to New York I don’t know why he needs to talk to someone so bad and Faith the girl that he tries to get a date with that night agrees, but she says not tonight , but tomorrow. Holden hangs up right away, so I am pretty sure that he is in need of help right away. G. If I was Holden when I meet Ernest Morrow’s mother on the train I would of told her what a bad kid he was. I am not really sure why he had to lie to her about her son. It seems that Ernest was not to nice to Holden,, so I would of told his mom how much of an idiot is son was . I would of also told that I am leaving Pency , not because I have to go for an operation , but because that school is full of fake people just like her son.

C. Why does Holden have to lie to Mrs. Morrow? She seems like a nice lady. Holden claims to hate her son, but then again, he hates every one. I get that he lies all the time for no reason, but I don’t get why he went making up this whole story about how great he was and how he was almost class president. It just makes no sense. And then he goes on to say he is leaving pency for a brain tumor operation. I can understand that he doesn’t want to say hes been kicked out, but isn’t that a little to serious of a lie? I would have said I am meeting my grandma before she dies (she doesn’t have to be dying because technically every time you meet someone, you are meeting them before they die.
G. I cant believe that Ackley is getting mad at holden for talking to him endlessly. I mean, Ackley is the obnoxious one! All he does is bother people who want nothing do with him and now that Holden wants to talk, he wants to sleep. But it does show that maybe Holden likes Ackley more then we originally thought.
E. I really like how in this story it clearly shows that Holden is weak mentally but since this is narrated by holden, he doesn’t come out and admit it. There is just clues saying that he isn’t stable, like when he said that he did not feel like calling Jane or when he called up some random girl to go on a date with.

D: I feel really bad for Holden. He has already had some sleep problems ever since his brother died and now he has to deal with this whole situation with Stradlater, now he cant even sleep at home. I thought it was hilariously ironic how when Holden is leaving he yells at all the pencey kids sleep tight ya morons, even though he had been academically discharged from school. Maybe its just that Holden is really smart, and its the other kids who are dumb. i just think that this point in his life is putting a lot of stress and depression on him. I thought it was hilarious how badly he lies to the mother of his friend that he hates at his school. I mean Holden lies about every single thing. He said he had to have a brain tumor taken out, which i think was like drawing the line of lying.
F: If i was Holden id feel really aggravated, frustrated, sad and disappointed. I just got kicked out of school. My friends dating and using my girl, i got into a fight with my roommate, and now i can only scoff at what im jealous of. i dont know what to do with my life right now.
E: I agree with richteri16, maybe Holden does need friends, however i think holden was being nice to the lady, but he needed to lie becuase he didint want to feel embarrassed. I think Holden didnt want to lie to her.

E. The more I read the more I start to dislike Holden. One main reason is because he is a liar. He was talking to Ms.Morrow saying great things about her son when in reality he didn't even like him. No wonder people don't like him and he's such a screw up. I don't feel bad for him at all anymore .
I I agree with Ian in his letter F response. I can see how Holden does miss his family. Holden is such a confusing character however his thoughts jump from one thing to another.
Holden is going through a lot in these chapters but his personality doesn't make you want to feel bad for him. At times you really think "Wow this kids life sucks" and then the next page he does something that pisses you off.

A. These three chapters of the book were very surprising and hysterical at the same time. The few moments that definitely made me chuckle was his conversation with Mrs. Morrow, his phone call to the stripper Faith Cavendish, and his views on the hotel that he was staying in. His conversatiion with Mrs. Morrow was probably the most ludicrous thing I have ever seen, or envisioned. He was a teenage student hitting on an older woman the age of 40. He even thinks that she is atttractive and that he wouldn't mind her company at all. He offers her a cigarette and an opportunity to have a cocktail with him in the carriage car. It really was just respectable in my eyes that Holden has enough courage to just go out into the world without any fear or thought about what might happen next. It also really surprised me that he actually did waht he wanted to do without second thought.
C. I wonder if Holden will ever go back to Pencey Prep. I think that Holden really needs to go back to relive the experiences that he will miss out on, also going back with Ackley because he is Holden's only friend. And although Holden is an amazing liar and can think of things to say in the wits of moments, that can only take him so far. What Holden needs, in my opinion, is a strong relationship that will keep him on the ground. And that only person so far in his life is Ackley. Doesn't Holden miss Ackley at all? If I were him eventually at some point I am going to miss my only friend in the world.
I. I agree with Isaiah Colon and Ian Richter about Holden really needing friends in his life. It was really sad to see that when Holden was in the Penn Station phone booth, and even though it was really late in the night, he didn't have any one to call. I felt very bad for him and felt like I should be his friend and help him on his journey.

D. “The first thing I did when I got off at Penn Station, I went into this phone booth. I felt like giving somebody a buzz, but as soon as I was inside, I couldn't think of anybody to call up. My brother D.B. was in Hollywood. My kid sister Phoebe was out. Then I thought of giving Jane Gallagher's mother a buzz. Then I thought of calling this girl Sally Hayes. I thought of calling Carl Luce. So I ended up not calling anybody. I came out of the booth, after about twenty minutes or so.” This quote from chapter 9 shows how isolated and lonely Holden is at this time. He really has no on to talk to about his feelings. The weird thing is that he does not think of calling his real mother or father but a friends mother. This shows that either is parents are jerks and he doesn’t like them, or they passed away.
C. Why does Holden try to forget about Jane? Is he jealous that Stradlater went out with her? Why did Holden lie to Ernest’s mother? She is such a nice person and he lied to her. Why does Holden keep on making the same mistakes, and why doen’t he learn from his mistakes? Why is Holden so lazy?
I. I agree with hankmichels ‘G’ response. Why does Ackley get upset that Holden wants him to stop talking. Doesn’t he realize that he talks way to much and he seems like a stalker?

E. I found a major character flaw. He seems embarrassed that he was expelled from Pencey Prep, but he has a flaw preventing him from doing anything about it, I believe Holden is extremely lazy and it holds him back from succeeding. C. Holden does something very interesting. He tells Ernest Morrow’s Mom that he is headed to New York to get a brain tumor operation. Why did Holden lie to her? Is he embarrassed about being expelled from School? If he is, why doesn’t he start to try in school? Does he ever learn from his mistakes? He seems to understand when things are wrong, but why does he never do anything about it D. I was also caught by the quote, “Sleep tight ya morons,” but I think for different reasons. Phil saw this line as showing an adventurous and courageous side of Holden, but I think it is actually quite ironic. I mean Holden seems like more of moron to me than the students in his dorm. They are all playing by the rules and setting themselves up for some sort of future, whereas all Holden does is dig himself into holes he cant get out of. Who really is the moron, I believe the true moron is Holden. While I admire his self-determination I think he is a complete fool for thinking he is going to create his own rules to the game of life

He doesn’t have anyone to relate to or understand his feelings. What I found funny is he doesn’t talk to his blood related parents, but his friend’s mom.
C. Why does Holden jealous that Stradlater went out with Jane? Why did Holden lie to Ernest’s mother when he talked to her? Why does Holden keep on making the same mistakes, and why doen’t he learn from his mistakes? Is he that stubborn?

F. If I was Holden I wuld feel kind of sorry for myself that I just got kicked out of another school. I wouldnt feel good about myself and it would just be a sorry process. This is not a good reputation Holden is setting for himself. C. I'm confused why Holden was lying to the mom. I understand why he didnt want to tell his mom that her son was actually a bully and that Holden hated him. But he took the lying a bit to far. I. I agree with richteri16 about Holden needing friends.

I. i agree with zay so fly's D post. I feel like Holden is becoming very overwhelmed with his life and that he has alot going on that he can't handle. The situation with his younger brother was very sad and it affected him alot. And now he has the whole thing with Stadlater going on. I feel like Holden is like a trouble magnet and that bad things just can't stop happening to him. E. I feel like Holden just can't stop lying cover up certain things that happened to him in the past. The women that he was talking to on the train was an old classmates mother. Apparently this classmate was a total jerk to Holden and Holden lies to his mom and says he was a nice kid and all that. I can kinda see what Holden is trying t do. I understand why he lied. I would never be able to tell a classmates mother that was a total jerk to me that he was a terrible kid. C. I'm confused about why Holden keeps trying to talk to girls like he's going to get into a serious relationship with them. We all know he's not going to because deep down he loves Jane but why does he keep trying to get other girls! Why can't he just profess his feeling for Jane and live like a happy and NORMAL person. It seems to me like he's very insecure.

C. I am confused on why Holden felt he needed to lie to the mother. I understand that he doesn't want to be labled a snitch, but he didn't need to overdue it. He didn't need to to overdue the lying aspect of it.
E.I think that Holden needs more friends. It's like he only wants to surround himself with certain people, which I think ties in with him being so shy to new people in his life
I. I agree with Hanks G response in saying that Ackley should not be the one who is getting upset with Holden for talking to much. Holden is normally the timorous person, and the one time he is very talkative it's problem for Ackley.

C. I don't know why Holden lied to Mrs. Morrow. Obviously, he didn't want to get in trouble but he didn't need to go as far as he did. I think he took it a bit too far. I understand little white lie is no big deal and it doesn't really cause much harm but Holden exceeded the boundaries of just a white lie. He kind of took it to the next level and exaggerated it.
G. If I were Holden, I wouldn't consider Ackley a good friend or as anything at all. Ackley doesn't really care what Holden has to say when Holden attempted to open up to Ackley. Instead of being open and wanting to listen to Holden, Ackley just tunes him out and actually gets mad at him for talking to him for such a long time. I don't Ackley would be the person to turn to for closure of advice or just to be someone to open up to. He's not that kind of friend, or I don't think a person for that in general.
I. I agree with what Jackson said in his response to letter E. I think Holden needs to surround himself with good friends. He needs to surround himself with better people but the only way he's going to do that is if he changes his personality. His pessimistic attitude makes people avoid him and he doesn't make friends very easily, if at all. He needs to change who he is before he can be around other people.
