C. Something about this part was especially confusing. I was confused about Laodamas. He taunted the other citizens to try and challenge Odysseus in sports. Laodamas went and asked Odysseus to partake and taunts and makes fun of Odysseus. He purposely tries to anger Odysseus so he will join and then Laodamas hopes to make fun of him. Odysseus refuses saying that he cannot partake because pains weigh his spirit. Laodamas then continues saying Odysseus is not a “real man” because he will not participate in the games. Odysseus retorts Laodamas and then throws the discus and beats all the people there. Alcinous was very polite and hospitable towards Odysseus, as were all the other citizens of the city. Why, all of a sudden, is Leodamas trying to anger Odysseus? G- If I were Odysseus I would not want to go back on a boat and sail on the seas when I know that there is a god out to get me and is willing to go through any means necessary to kill me or harm me some more. I would rather stay on the Phaecians land and start a new life instead of having to travel on such dangerous terrains and risk my life and deal with a psychotic god that just happens to be the god of the sea. I also would be a little nervous as to why the Phaecians are being so nice and generous with me, I would not be so relaxed instead I would be on high alert and constantly have my guard up. E- I was very confused on why the king would give Odysseus so much for nothing. The kind does not even know the mans name and yet he gives him more glory thans his favorite son. He even lets him sit on his favourite sons chair.

Isaiah Colon D: I thought it was funny when Athena once again helps Odysseus In this new land throughout his journey. In these lines not only does she change into another person during the scene, she also helps Odysseus by making him appear taller, broader and muscular. I am starting to assume more and more that Athena is some sort of guardian angel for Odysseus. I also thought it was odd that the people were so upfront with providing Odysseus with a Ship and food and wealth. The king also said that he could stay as long as he wanted and that it was so nice there, he would forget about his old home and that he could make this land his new home G: If I was Odysseus I would feel kind of fake. I say this because it seems like no matter where he goes, Odysseus is never shown by his true self. I have been learning about the true self in religion class and Odysseus doesn’t support himself to his whole. For example, when Athena makes him bigger. Odysseus doesn’t even get a chance to see if they would like him for his own size. Plus, he is already abnormally tall. I’m not saying that This has changed Odysseus inside but appearance is your first judgment on someone, and it’s a false appearance. C: One question I had was why the King doesn’t ask for his name at first and grants him with a ship, a place to stay, and wealth and even his daughter?

C. What had me confused was when Laodamas teased the other citizens to tried to challenge Odysseus in sports. Laodamas goes up to him and asks to join and he makes fun of Odysseus while doing this. Why is Laodamas trying to anger Odysseus? The only reason I think he’s making fun of him is so he can get him to join that way. Odysseus says no because he’s in pain. Laodamas then continues to taunt Odysseus saying he is not a “real man” because he will not participate. Odysseus finally just joins and then throws the discus and beats everyone. Everyone that day was being especially polite to Odysseus that day. D. One part that I liked was that the Gods kept on acting with the mortal world. Athena gave Odysseus the appearance that he was strong when he really was malnourished. She then later on in the reading tonight took the form of a record scorer for discuss and praised Odysseus for his amazing throw and this was significant cause that showed that even a blind man can “see” the throw and be amazed. E. On lines 216-229 I learned more about Odysseus. No matter what anyone says to Odysseus, he takes even Laodamas who taunts him so much. Eventually he gets fed up and when he throws it, he makes him look like a fool and a weakling. Odysseus basically made a statement saying don’t mess with me.

C. One thing that I thought was strange was when Odysseus started to cry and get upset when famous harper began to sing. The passage said, “That was the song of the famous harper sang but Odysseus, clutching his flaring sea-blue cape in both powerful hands, drew it over his head and buried his handsome face, ashamed his hosts might see him shedding tears.”. Is famous harper reminding Odysseus about his family and homeland, or is he crying out of joy that he is finally going to get home? Why would Broadsea and Laodamas want to pick a fight with Odysseus? Are they just jealous or do they want to prove that he really isn’t that tough? Why does Athena make Odysseus taller and larger, isn’t he already taller and stronger than everybody else? Does she want to make him unstoppable? G. If I were Odysseus I would feel unstoppable. I was trapped on Calypso's island and escaped on a makeshift raft, and then when I finally thought I made it to civilization I had to face the wrath of Poseidon just before getting there. Now I'm having a boat made for me to go home. I’ve met a beautiful woman on an island and I’ve got Athena looking over me. Nothing could possibly stop me. D. I thought it was funny when Athena helps Odysseus in this new land and throughout his journey. In these lines not only does she change into another person during the scene, she also helps Odysseus by making him appear taller, broader and muscular. I thought it was funny because nowadays people would think he was taking major drugs.
